Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups bread flour
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda (for boiling)

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast by combining warm water, sugar, and yeast in a large bowl. Let sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Add bread flour and salt to the yeast mixture and mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise for about 1 hour until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  6. Punch down the risen dough, divide into 8 pieces, shape into balls, and poke a hole in the center.
  7. Boil water with baking soda in a large pot and gently boil each bagel for 1-2 minutes on each side.
  8. Place boiled bagels on a baking sheet, add toppings, and bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Cool slightly before serving.

Notes
