Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups bread flour
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1 tablespoon barley malt syrup (optional)
  • Poppy seeds or sesame seeds (optional for topping)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine bread flour and salt.
  3. Pour the yeast mixture into the flour and mix until a dough forms. Knead the dough for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover, and let it rise for about 1 hour until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  6. Bring a large pot of water to a boil and add barley malt syrup if using.
  7. Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a bagel.
  8. Boil the bagels in batches for 1-2 minutes on each side.
  9. Place the boiled bagels on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Sprinkle with seeds if desired.
  10. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  11. Let cool before enjoying.

Notes

For a shiny crust, brush the bagels with an egg wash before baking. Freeze leftover bagels in a freezer bag for up to three months.
